Fall 2016 Haute Couture Fashion Week came to an epic finale with Fendi last night, and the season is full of exquisite, extraordinary looks that have taken weeks or even months to create. As always, couture is all in the details.
Whether it’s something as simple as a sleeve with just the right type of rings to finish off the look, or small, intricate pieces of fabrics have been recycled, swirled, twirled, and sewn together to make an over-the-top dress, often the full beauty of couture is in the close-up.
After all, couture is not just about the showstoppers and the most outrageous looks — it is about the craftsmanship and the finer details that aren’t always obvious.

1. Christian Dior
At first glance, this is a beautiful white dress, but seeing it on a mannequin at the atelier, you notice the heavy pleated ruffle peeping out and draped and sewn to perfection, making this dress anything but simple.

3. Chanel
A black off-shoulder evening dress from Chanel is a classic, but on closer inspection, you see the pleated tulle sleeve with a rich, jewel-embroidered bow to give the dress that extra wow.

4. Valentino
A white shirt and black pants will not change the fashion landscape, but look closer and it’s the small details of the shirt — from the split sleeve tied up with small ribbons to the French lace on the cuff — that make this so much more special.

The details make this dress so heavenly; it’s feminine and ornate, with striking crystals crisscrossing the body and sleeves.

John Galliano’s vision must be seen from all angles for the full picture. Whether a coat is upside down, back to front, or inside out, the point is to make you think about the collection as a whole — and in this case, we got a little French Revolution, mixed with urban streetwear, meets combat gear.

As if the full bonnet were not dramatic enough from the front, the back is pure Gaultier — bondage-style lace-up and covered in lace for good measure!

The first time showing on the couture calendar is any designer’s dream, and this was definitely a dream come true for Scognamiglio. Body-hugging black lace, feathers at the front and on the side, sequins sculpted around the shape of the model’s arm … heavenly.
